I had an interesting conversation with a third year dental student via messenger a couple weeks ago, the contents of which ended up on DrBicuspid. I think you’ll find the conversationĀ interesting and I know it will spark some debate as my assessment of the situation doesn’t exactly follow with the party line. You can access the story here.

  1. So I get this piece posted in the largest dental newsletter in North America and not only is it true but it will have the net effect of making people think twice about going to residency and put pressure on those who are opening up residency programs… And all I hear from orthodontists is that they are going to “call me out for pissing on the specialty”.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t bitch about there being too much competition and too many residency programs but then get offended when someone does something to make people question the idea of spending hundreds of thousands to go to a pay program. You can’t bitch about student debt and then deny it’s a big deal. You can’t ask for honest discussion and then cry foul. You can’t sit on your hands and do nothing and also allow the AAO to do nothing and then get upset about this piece. Do something. Anything. Or shut the hell up.
Watching orthodontists react to this piece is like watching people who don’t vote complain about the government.

  2. I would not lend money to an ortho. resident at any rate of interest—the risk of non-repayment /bankruptcy is too high.I would not recommend it as a career to my kids . I have and am having a great career but times change for many reasons .In the world I live in financial investment {and time } need to provide a return .I think the banks operate on this premise.
Lets get real —unless we as a profession get very, very active in explaining to the public what we do and how we do it better than anyone else ,our demise will be sooner rather than later—and it will not matter how many Willy-Wonka awards you got at school !
Organised orthodontics are talking about buggy whips after the invention of the internal combustion engine.
